BARROW, THOMAS F. (b. 1938) Student Independent 6, 1966.
[Chicago]: Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, 1966. Issued in an unstated, but very small edition, presumably for his thesis project under Aaron Siskind. Published thin black card slipcase and chemise. 7 /4 x 9 1/2 inches (242 x 198 mm); printed title, 10 original gelatin silver prints (unsigned). About fine, the images without defect, very minor wear to the case.
"These photographs are from a series In the Garden, the second of three sections of a study entitled The Automobile."--title page. "In the mid-1960s Barrow was a student of Aaron Siskind at the Institute of Design in Chicago, where he completed a 115 image study for his thesis project, entitled The Automobile. Surveying the role of cars in American culture, this series is divided into three distinct sections, which follow the vehicles, respectively, from their display in showrooms though daily use on the streets and eventually to their final end in junk lots. The middle section--a concise set of ten photographs depicting drivers in their car--was published by the Institute of Design as the Student Independent 6 portfolio." --Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. The work appears to be rare. FirstSearch notes a copy only at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, though the Museum of Contemporary Photography also owns one, based on our research.
