Lot 28
KNOX, DAVID (Active 1860s) [Mortar Dictator, in Front of Petersburg],
October 1864. Unmounted albumen print, 7 1/2 x 10 inches (190 x 255 mm), verso with modern pencil notations. Minor creasing, tone slightly pale but overall excellent. Framed.
A variant of the version in Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War, Vol. II, with a casually dressed gun crew who can be seen in the background of that image. The shells standing by them have been moved to the foreground, so the emplacement looks much as it would if it were in action. The tree-line, platform etc. are identical in all respects, and this was taken just before or after the Sketch Book image. The tracks of the Petersburg Railroad can be seen extending away from the platform.
Property from an International Corporation.

Estimate: $300 - $450
