NEW YORK, NY – Doyle is pleased to offer our first online-only sale of the year -- Sporting & Travel Books from the Library of Arnold 'Jake' Johnson (1930-2017). This expansive auction comprises over 300 lots of books and is offered as a timed online-only auction on Doyle.com. Bidding will close on Tuesday, February 4 beginning at 10am EST.

The public is invited to view the books at Doyle from 10am-5pm on Friday, January 31 and Monday, February 3. Doyle is located at 175 East 87th Street in Manhattan.

This auction comprises books covering all aspects of Sporting and Travel, including:

Several original manuscripts and photograph albums, including: “Day Book of Samuel Hoffman 1836 to 1843,” which recounts woodcock, snipe, and rail shooting in New Jersey; “To Lorna” by Al Khanzir (Hugh G. Martin), a collection of articles compiled by the author for his wife, with original photographs and a watercolor by Lorna Martin; “The Cruise of the Scow de Luxe” by J. E. Umbach, a typescript describing a fishing trip in British Columbia (circa 1918); as well as a selection of photograph albums depicting hunting, sport, and travel in India, Africa, Canada, etc.

Privately printed and hard-to-come-by titles, including: Ovis Poli. The Marco Polo Sheep by Henry A. Byroade (“for private circulation only”, circa 1965); Days in Falkenberg. A Record of Sport in Sweden by W. M. Wilkinson (1883); The 1907 Hunt of the Forest City Hunting Club In the Wilds of Northern Maine by Arthur G. Potter et al. (1908), written by club members recounting their annual three-week hunting trip to Maine; as well as another rare Maine title, The Raid of 96 by E. M. Goodall with Rejoinder by R. V. Joyce (circa 1896), which is the account of a bogus liquor raid on Camp Goodall, a private fishing club in Maine, by rival Camp Hopewell.

Some important rare titles, such as a first edition of The East India Vade-Mecum by Thomas Williamson (1810), which was the first travel guide to India; Tibetan Trek (1934) and Salween (1938), both in dust jackets, by Ronald Kaulback; and other titles by important authors such as Zane Grey, Hoffman Philip, Henry William Herbert, Rowland Ward, Frederick Courtney Selous, John C. Phillips, George Bird Grinnell, F. Gray Griswold, and many others.

Titles by female authors are not neglected: Sporting Sketches by Mrs. Walter Creyke (as “Diane Chasseresse”) (1890); The Gentlewoman's Book of Sports by Lady Beatrice Violet Greville (1892); 1,000 Miles in a Machilla by Olivia Colville (1911); Casuals in the Caucasus. The diary of a sporting holiday by Agnes Herbert (1912); Trials and Pleasures of an Uncompleted Tour by Mrs. C. H. M. Thring (1914); Hinckley Township or Grand Lake Stream Plantation by Minnie Atkinson (1920); Days and Nights of Shikar by Mrs. W. W. Baillie (1921); I Married Adventure by Osa Johnson (1940); The Flighty Prince (1963) and Miscellanea (1965) by Kitty Milbank; and more.

TIMED ONLINE-ONLY AUCTION
Bidding in the timed online-only auction will close on Tuesday, Feb 4 beginning at 10am EST. Lots will close sequentially, one lot per minute, with a soft close. Should any bids be placed in the final minute, bidding will remain open on that lot for one additional minute.

SPECIAL EXHIBITION
All of the books will be on public exhibition at Doyle from 10am-5pm on Friday, Jan 31 and Monday, Feb 3 by appointment. Doyle is located at 175 East 87th Street in Manhattan.

PAYMENT
Payment can be made by cash, check, credit card or wire transfer. The final purchase price will include the successful hammer price plus the Buyer’s Premium of 25% and any applicable sales tax.
