Lot Details

Lot 55
THOREAU, HENRY DAVID The Writings of Henry David Thoreau.
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1906. The Manuscript Edition with two folded manuscript leaves (full recto and verso) bound in (both inlaid to size), the set number 381 of 600 sets signed on behalf of the Houghton Mifflin Co., the additional manuscript leaf with pencil notation as being from set 481. Twenty volumes. Original cloth with paper spine labels. 9 x 6 inches (23 x 16 cm); frontispieces and map. Ink signature dated 1930 to front blank, bookplate of Horsehaven Aiken, S.C. and booklabel of [Daniel] Siegel to pastedown, minor wear to bindings.
The definitive writings of Thoreau, here with two manuscript leaves, offering four pages in his hand. The first leaf is apparently from one of Thoreau's journals, and corresponds textually roughly to those for November 1858 (reinforced by internal dating to that month); it is on the subject of the leaves of chestnuts, poplars, willows and aspens in winter, exhibiting Thoreau's typically keen observation. The leaf bears many emendations and additions in pencil in Thoreau's hand. The second leaf is from the author's Cape Cod, (published 1865), from Chapter II ("Stage Coach Views"), on the geology of the region. This leaf is noted marginally as being from set 481, and thus was likely added later. It also bears extensive pencil annotations. (20)
