Lot Details

Lot 31
HEMINGWAY, ERNEST Audio recording of Hemingway.
Circa 1948-1961. Three heavy vinyl LP records by Allied with crayon markings only indicating the sides, the records housed in a re-purposed sleeve from a classical recording with hand-written labels, all housed a record mailer sleeve addressed to Albert R. Bochroch (likely the professor, race broadcaster, and author of several books on the history of the automobile). The contents not fully verified and the lot sold as is.
The first record here has been played and opens with Hemingway, Mary Hemingway, and Roberto discussing the placement of the microphone, followed by Hemingway describing the writing of The Fifth Column in the fall of 1937. This recording seems to match the published recording released in 1965 under the title "Ernest Hemingway Reading." The recording is scratchy but warm with Hemingway's voice, deep and dramatic. The contents of the balance of the records are not verified. The present records may be an early pressing of the recordings made at Hemingway's Finca Vigia, Cuba between 1948-1961 (dates from 1965 album sleeve).
