The Flagellation of Christ
Oil on panel
34 x 23 1/2 inches (86.4 x 59.7 cm)
This work, which was possibly intended as an organ door, is closely related to an engraving by Aegidius Sadeler the Younger, which records the composition of a now-lost Flagellation by Palma formerly in the now-demolished Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Venice. Carlo Ridolfi (Le maraviglie dell'arte ... (1648, p. 175) describes the painting, which was in the chancel of the church during his lifetime. (Cited by N. Ivanoff and P. Zampetti, Palma il Giovane, Bergamo, 1980, 676)
