Rare George III Bilston Enamel and Gilt-Metal Spyglass Compendium Etui
Third quarter 18th century
In the manner of Thomas Ribright
The white ground with gilt highlights and polychrome-painted bucolic scenes and flowers, an etui at one end opening to scissors, fruit knife, tweezers, bodkin and toothpick, each end with dust slides opening to reveal a spyglass. Length 5 1/8 inches (13 cm).

Purchased from the above, January 23, 1988.

A 'perspective glass' of this form was patented by the optician Thomas Ribright in 1749. Similar examples were sold: Sotheby's, London, June 5, 2001, lot 36, Charles Miller Ltd, London, April 30, 2014, lot 236 and Flints Auction Ltd, London, April 26, 2018, lot 204.
