English & Continental Furniture / Old Master Paintings

NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 10am presented a broad selection of elegant English and Continental furniture and decorative arts, including Georgian silver, porcelain, mirrors, clocks, chandeliers, tapestries and rugs. The selection of Old Master paintings and drawings offered landscapes, still lifes, portraits and religious subjects by European artists from the Renaissance to the 19th century.

With competitive bidding in the saleroom, on the telephones and via the Internet, the auction totaled a successful $1,227,725 against an estimate of $902,700-1,414,100, with an outstanding 95% sold by value and 89% by lot.

Furniture & Decorative Arts

Highlights of the sale include an Assembled Set of Twelve Mahogany and Yewwood Windsor Armchairs, which achieved $15,000. Designed in the ‘Gothick’ style popularized by Horace Walpole at Strawberry Hill, the form of the present armchairs is 'considered to be the 'best' Windsor seating furniture' by Bernard D. Cotton, The English Regional Chair, 1990.

Also noteworthy are a pair of Chinese Export Porcelain Famille Rose Mandarin Ground Covered Urns with Gilt-Bronze Mounts that fetched $11,875, many times their estimate of $1,200-1,800. Each mounted as a lamp, the urns are decorated with molded figures in panels depicting Guanyin and attendants in a landscape on a turquoise ground.

Digby Scott and Benjamin Smith produced some of the finest silver in early 19th century London. From 1802-1807 they were principal suppliers to Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, the official Jeweller, Gold and Silversmiths to the Crown. The sale offered a pair of marvelous George III sterling silver-gilt mounted cut glass claret jugs dated 1806 which soared past their estimate to $16,250.

An Elizabeth I Sterling Silver Gilt Mounted Salt-Glazed Rhenish Tigerware Jug estimated at $8,000-12,000 sold above its high estimate to achieve $15,625 with buyer’s premium. Surviving English silver mounted German stoneware jugs exemplify the complex and interwoven trading patterns and customs of Renaissance Europe. Beer was the preferred beverage in 16th century England for all classes, who chose handsome imported German Tigerware vessels for everyday use. Wealthy drinkers could have their pieces mounted with expensive sterling silver decorated in the latest style with strapwork, fruit and figures. The fragility of the material means that only a fraction of those produced over four hundred years ago have survived to the present.

Old Master Paintings & Drawings

The February 5 auction also featured Old Master Paintings & Drawings – including a circa 1798-99 portrait of Madame Leclerc, née Pauline Bonaparte, by Marie-Victoire Lemoine (1754-1820) that achieved a stunning $387,000, far surpassing its estimate of $40,000-70,000. (More).
