Lot 3
[ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT] Les Tres Riches Heures du Duke de Berry
[with] Commentary to the Facsimile Edition of Manuscript 65 from the Collection of the Musee Conde, Chantilly. Lucerne, Switzerland; Faksimile-Verlag, 1984. Number 312 of 980 copies. Two volumes (facsimile and commentary), the facsimile volume bound by Burkhardt of Zurich in facsimile of the original manuscript in full red morocco, the commentary in quarter morocco, housed together in an acrylic slipcase. 11 1/2 x 8 inches (29 x 20.5 cm); [Facsimile]: [207] ff., with 65 small miniatures and 66 full-page miniatures printed by Mengis and Sticher of Lucerne. [Text]: 354 pp.; 20 monochrome illustrations within text. Some nominal wear, a fine set.

A superlative facsimile of what is generally considered the most beautiful manuscript of the period, commissioned by Jean Duke of Berry (1340-1416) from the Limbourg brothers, who previously had produced his Belles Heures. Left incomplete by the death both of patron and artists, the work was posthumously completed by Jean Colombe for Charles, Duke of Savoy.
