Lot Details

Lot 27
EDWARD, PRINCE OF WALES Early autograph letter signed.
Headquarters, 14th Corps, British Expeditionary Force: 17 July 1916. Two-page autograph letter written in a dense hand and signed "Edward" on the recto and verso of a single sheet, accompanied by the original mailing envelope headed in type "On His Majesty's Service" and accomplished in Edward's hand. The letter 7 3/4 x 5 inches (20 x 13 cm); in a double-sided frame. Visibly fine but not examined out of frame.
An interesting World War I letter from the future King to the Rev. E. H. Arkwright of the Royal Navy College at Dartmouth. Here Edward comments on the "departure of the old 'Brit'" and mentions class mates of his from the college who are now serving in the war ("Wainright also went down in a ship but was saved"). Edward continues "Now there is a big push going on in the Somme simultaneous with the Russian offensive, so that I think the Huns are really beginning to feel the affects of the war." Such early letters with war related content are rare.
