POTTER, BEATRIX Peter Rabbit Sledging [Two rabbits in sledding mishap].
Original ink and watercolor drawing on card, signed at lower right "H.B.P. 94", the full card 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches (9 x 11 cm); Framed. Fine.
Provenance: The Hammond Family, relatives of Beatrix Potter's first governess (this information provided in purchase receipt reporting this drawing previously mounted in an autograph album belonging to the Hammonds, which also contained a Potter signature dated 1907); Justin Schiller, Ltd.; to Mary K. Young, 1992
This drawing relates to a group of Christmas cards created by Potter in 1894, seven years before the publication of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. It is sometimes paired with a "before" drawing, showing the rabbit in the blue jacket pulling a sled containing the second rabbit as they past a signpost; the present "after" drawing shows the conclusion to this short tale, depicts the rabbits buried in snow after their sled has upturned, the signpost far behind them, and the red blanket loosened revealing a blue coat on the bunny. The rabbit on the left wearing a blue coat resembles Peter Rabbit. This drawing was reportedly mounted in an autograph album (no longer present) which contained Potter's signature dated 1907. A drawing in the collection of the Free Library of Philadelphia known as "Bunnies in Snow" presents the tale on both sides of a single card, and that card verso is very similar to the present drawing. The current drawing is also very similar to a drawing sold at Sotheby's London, 10 December 2013, lot 370 (that drawing, sold with the title Peter Rabbit Sledging also sold previously at Sotheby's London, 4 May 1995, lot 508).
