LYELL, D. D. Nyasaland for the Hunter and Settler.
London: Horace Cox, 1912. First edition. Publisher's green pictorial cloth gilt. 8 3/8 x 5 1/4 inches; [viii], , 116 pp.; map, frontispiece and plates after photographs, publisher's advertisements. Spine ends bumped, rear free endpaper toned, else fine.

"While not a book of hunting adventures, this slender work does provide plenty of information on choosing a big game rifle as well as the varieties of game encountered in Nyasaland. Several of the plates depict the spoor of wild beasts, a theme Lyell continued in later works. As he notes: 'To spoor an animal for miles is far more interesting than killing it, for tracking game is the highest branch of good hunting.' Of additional interest are the ads at the end of the book depicting all manner of British sporting firearms, ammunition and equipment" (Czech). Czech, Africa, p. 173.
