MUNDY, [GODFREY CHARLES] Pen and Pencil Sketches, being the Journal of a Tour in India.
London: John Murray, 1832. First edition. Two volumes. Contemporary three-quarters gilt-ruled morocco over marbled boards, the spines each in six compartments separated by five raised bands, gilt lettered in two. 8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches; [xv], 381; viii, 376 pp.; folding map with hand color in outline, frontispieces, plates. Light wear to extremities, scattered foxing throughout, bookplates to front pastedowns.
With bookplates of Kimbolton Castle and the Chisholm family ("Feros ferio"). "Traveling throughout India, the author hunted tiger near the Ganges and in the Dehra Dun. He spent time among the Mahrattas, observed wild elephants, and participated in antelope hunting with cheetahs and falcons. He also hunted lion between Pewur and Hansi, and thgouh none were obtained, Mundy includes a discussion of the lion hunting exploits of Col. James Skinner and William Fraser. The plates of tiger hunting from elephant back are quite striking" (Czech). Czech, Asia, p. 145. (2)
