NEW YORK, NY -- Following the recent success of the online sales of Angling and Hunting Books, Doyle is pleased to auction a selection of Travel Literature and Sporting Books assembled by Arnold “Jake” Johnson (1930-2017) of Bozeman, Montana. The current sale comprises approximately 275 lots and is offered as a timed online-only auction on Doyle.com. Bidding will close on Tuesday, October 30 beginning at Noon EDT. The public is invited to view the books at Doyle on Friday, October 26 and Monday, October 29 from 10am-5pm. Doyle is located at 175 East 87th Street in Manhattan.

The auction offers books covering all aspects of travel and sport, including a group of material pertaining to scientific, sporting, missionary, and exploratory travel throughout the world, with particular focus on India and Africa.

India is represented by a striking album of sketches by Captain Horace Brown of the Royal (Bombay) Artillery, containing 86 guarded mounts with approximately 172 mounted albumen prints and reproductions of Brown's ink and watercolor sketches, with two large original compositions and one small tipped to the endpapers (Lot 38, est. $400-$600).

The Americas are not neglected; a unique and charming manuscript diary detailing a seven-week camping and canoeing trip through the wilds of Ontario by four Yale University students provides delightful first-hand anecdotes and observations of the Canadian wilderness at the turn of the 20th-century (Lot 51, est. $200-$300).

Of great importance to the history of exploration in South-Equatorial Africa is Kerr's The Far Interior: A Narrative of Travel and Adventure from the Cape of Good Hope across the Zambesi to the Lake Regions of Central Africa (Lot 133, est. $400-$500).

A true bibliophile, Johnson was an inveterate collector of rare items related to angling, travel, expeditions in India and Africa, English sporting and color-plate, 19th century big game hunting, and Western Americana. His collection includes hundreds of rare books, hand-written accounts of hunting expeditions, striking examples of 19th century photographic travel albums, and elusive bibliographies and facsimiles of major works.
This remarkable and extensive collection, numbering in the thousands of volumes, is being offered an ongoing series of live and online auctions.
