NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle’s auction on May 1, 2018 showcased a range of United States and World coins, bank notes, and stamps, including many rarities. United States material in the sale comprised a wide assortment from early coins and bank notes through the 20th century. With bidding in the salesroom, on the telephones and on the Internet, the sale totaled a successful $378,113, within its estimate of $324,150-429,650.

Silver Dollars were the lynch pin of American Trade during the late 1800s. From the Estate of Martha Pope, the wife of broadcast pioneer and WPIX president Leavitt J. Pope, was a Choice Brilliant Uncirculated example of the rare 1879 Morgan Dollar from the Carson City Mint that fetched $6,500, well over its estimate of $4,000-6,000. Known as the Commercial Dollar of 1873-1885, these Trade Dollars were developed as a means to encourage interest in International trade and to promote the use of U.S. silver. The legal tender status of Trade Dollars was revoked by Congress in 1887. Morgan Dollars were introduced in 1878 and minted until 1921 in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Carson City, this 1879 CC from the Pope Estate being the scarcest date.

Also from the Pope Estate was an extensive collection of United States early stamp issues comprising singles from 1847 to 1940 graded Very Good to Extremely Fine that doubled its estimate of $5,000-6,000 to sell for $11,400.

Eugene M. Lang is best remembered for his 1981 sixth grade commencement address in which he promised to pay the students’ college tuition, a gesture which led to the establishment of the I Have a Dream Foundation. From the Estate of Eugene M. Lang was a group of Hi-Grade 1882-O Morgan Dollars in Brilliant Uncirculated Mint State that soared past their estimate of $2,500-3,500 to achieve $18,000.

All prices include the buyer's premium.
