According to the Frost & Reed label on the reverse, the barque Bristow was built in Liverpool in 1854 for Townsend and Spearing and was commanded by Captain Hoodless.

Visible craquelure in the lower register. Inpainted cracks in both sky and water. Restored lines running parallel to the left and right edges, replacing losses presumably caused by stretcher marks. Some touches on the ship and its sales. Canvas rippling along the right edge. Scrapes, some areas of raised paint surface in the sky.
