After Antonio Allegri da Correggio
The Madonna and Child with a Rabbit (La Zingarella)
Oil on canvas
21 1/4 x 16 3/4 inches (51.5 x 42.5 cm)
The traditonal title "Zingarella" for this compositon is owed to the Virgin's costume, which was once thought to be that of a gypsy girl (zingarella). She is shown seated on the ground in the classic pose of a Madonna of Humility, derived from a moment of rest on the flight to Egypt. The original composition, now in the Galleria Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples, was finished by Correggio circa 1515/17.
