Russian Porcelain Group of Pantalone and Colombina
Popov Manufactory, Moscow, mid-19th century
Columbine modeled seated with a dog on her lap, holding a mask in her right hand and stroking the standing Pantalone's beard with her left, on a naturalistic base applied with flowers, underglaze blue mark under base. Height 7 inches (17.8 cm).
This porcelain group of the well-known Commedia dell'arte characters is based on the original Meissen group by J.J. Kändler around 1736. Kändler's group was derived from an engraving by Christoph Weigel of 1723 which depicts a troupe of commedia actors.
