Lot 186
MUDFORD, WILLIAM An Historical Account of the Campaign in the Netherlands in 1815...
London: Henry Colburn, 1817. First edition, Period three-quarters red morocco, marbled sides, all edges marbled. 1 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches (32 x 27 cm); xx, 368 pp., half-title present; with two folding maps, the folding plate of the field of Waterloo, the engraved title (colored), the portraits of the general officers as frontispiece, and plates A-W (with D-D, the plate of the Waterloo Memorial, and the "Flight of Bonaparte" plate at end, but lacking (as in most copies) the "View of the City of Brussels," which is not mentioned in the "Description of Plates." Light binding wear, some separation of the Waterloo map at the mount, generally a very nice copy indeed. With a poignant gift inscription on the half-title, dated 1914 "May the British Army do as well in 1915 as in 1815!".
The very fine plates in this work are aquatints and etchings. Other than the view of Brussels, this collates as Abbey; of this, Abbey says "it may be a supplementary plate of which few survive." Abbey Life 372; Tooley 272.
