DOUBLEDAY, ABNER Autograph letter signed to Major General Philip Henry Sheridan
. Philadelphia: 20 July 1865. 2 1/2 page autograph letter on one folded sheet, signed "A. Doubleday," with a postscript signed with initials and docketing in another hand. Presented in a double-sided frame with the letter opened to 8 x 10 inches. Usual folds, a few thumbprints and some ink spots in docketing.
In this letter, General Doubleday recommends his brother for Sheridan's use as he speaks fluent Spanish, French and German. Doubleday writes "I have no desire to puff him, but as you may need a man of his character in some future Mexican complication, I thought I should mention the subject to you. He has been in Mexico on the Texan Border before the war and consequently is well acquainted with their manners and customs..."
