FAIRBANKS, Jr., DOUGLAS Group of signed letters to Aileen Mehle.
Mostly New York & Palm Beach: 1960s onward. Approximately 12 items bearing signatures (one from Mary Lee Fairbanks) including typed letters; a long playful manuscript poem dated 1965 possibly in Mary Lee's hand; a playful poem using the letters of Mehle's name to start each line; signed greeting cards with photographs, etc. A few original envelopes present. Usual folds, some toning and light wear from handling, a few photographs of Fairbanks included in the lot.
Friends with Aileen Mehle for decades, in a charming 1980 typed letter Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. has written "I have just read this morning's paper and your description of me. I immediately went to the travel agency and booked passage for you and me to a South Sea Island with an open-ended return so that we may have an indefinite stay. Your column will be ghost-written by a selected number of Nobel Prize winners and there will be no return trip for ages" and Fairbanks has closed the letter in manuscript which trails off the page reading "and ages and ages and ages..."
