Oil on canvas
60 1/4 x 47 1/4 inches (153 x 120 cm)
The pages of the book held by the sitter contain a possible signature (illegible) and the date 1618; a drawing of a skull and crossed bones; the Latin words despice (look down on); prospice (watch); respice (consider); and suspice (undertake) arranged in a radiating pattern; and a reference to 1 Corinthians 15:36, a verse from Saint Paul's discourse on the Resurrection: You fool! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.
