Chinese Gilt and Polychrome Lacquer Carved Wood Screen
19th Century, Dated Tongzhi Yichou Year 1865
The rectangular form painted on one side with a scene of Xiwang mu receiving birthday greetings from immortals on an open palace terrace with a mountainous landscape in the distance, the other side inscribed with the date Togzhi Yichou year with a dedication to Lang Wang on her seventeenth birthday, all above a carved wood panel with a vessel flanked by two sinuous dragons, the trestle painted in red, blue and green pigments with scrolling lotus, all reserved on a black lacquer ground. Height 80 1/4 inches.

Small scattered lacquer losses particularly to around the inset central panel, where joins the frame. Gilt wear and some pigment wear. Panel with vertical cracking on both sides to lower half of panel .
