A Naval Battle with English, French, and Spanish Ships
Oil on canvas
25 x 30 inches (63.5 x 76.2 cm)
This painting probably represents the Battle of Trafalgar, the most decisive naval victory of the Napoleonic Wars. On October 21, 1805, the Royal Navy, led by Admiral Lord Nelson, defeated a combined French and Spanish fleet off Cape Trafalgar on the southwest coast of Spain. Although Lord Nelson was killed during the battle, the French and Spanish fleet lost 22 ships while the Royal Navy lost none.
