This striking image of a gentleman holding his fire while engaged in a duel is thought possibly to depict Alexander Hamilton. The fashionably attired figure resembles known likenesses of Hamilton, who met his death on July 11, 1804 in a notorious duel with Aaron Burr. Although it is believed that both men fired their weapons, Hamilton wasted his shot, aiming at a tree instead of his opponent. Burr aimed at his adversary, wounding him fatally.
