This painting is among the group of works Fortuny created of North African subjects, demonstrating the naturalism he combined with a sensitive eye for textures and a glistening luminosity. Probably rendered on his third visit to Morocco in 1872, it was such works that brought him to international fame.

Glue relined. Frame rubbing. There is some inpaint in the shadows of the buildings at the upper left, the shadows of the figure at center left (particularly in the blue cloak, in the outline of the vessel at the lower center, in the ground around the man's feet and in the background around the signature,but not on the signature. Also inpainting in the blue in the upper left corner. There is no further restoration visible under UV light.
