Doyle New York held a successful auction of Rare Books, Autographs and Maps on November 25, 2013. The sale offered almost 350 lots, including Americana, early manuscripts, first editions, literature, plate books, atlases, travel, maps, science, illustration art and autographs.
Highlighting the sale was a superb copy of the 1729 first edition in English of Newton’s Principia, published as The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, the two volumes in unrestored contemporary calf. Estimated at $25,000-$35,000, it sold for $68,750.
Also noteworthy was a complete copy of Cotton Mather’s Johannes in Eremo, Boston, 1695, that fetched 28,125, approximately ten times its estimate of $2,000-$3,000. This work is an important precursor to the Magnalia Christi Americana, and includes a proposal for that work.
An autograph section featured the Tim Boxer Collection of Signed Polaroids that fetched $46,875, well over its estimate of $20,000-$30,000. Collected while working as a society and celebrity photographer for the New York Post in the 1970s and 1980s, these signed Polaroids capture all the luminaries of the day including Andy Warhol, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Brooke Shields, Meryl Streep, and over 200 others.
All prices include the buyer's premium.
