STIEGLITZ, ALFRED (1864-1946) [The Steerage, 1907].
. Large-format photogravure on moderately thick cream wove Japanese paper (Japan vellum), image 13 1/8 x 10 1/2 inches (264 x 330 mm), sheet size 18 1/4 x 12 1/2 inches, printed in 1915 for insertion into issue 7-8 of the magazine 291, published September-October 1915; Together with 291, issues 1, 2, 3, 4, 7/8, 10/11 and 12. Generally in clean, sound condition. There is a slight crease to the left upper margin of the sheet, well clear of the plate, otherwise in fine condition.
Stieglitz's classic image was the only photogravure to appear in 291. The first issue contains a Calligramme by Apollinaire, artwork by Picasso, Steichen, Agnes Meyer and de Zayas. The periodical is a remarkable example of the American avant-garde tendency at that period. Each of the issues included is complete, and this run contains seven of the nine that were published (the missing 5/6 was a double issue also).
