Doyle New York is located at 175 East 87th Street. In addition to the printed auction catalogue, there will be a fully illustrated Internet version of the catalogue at DoyleNewYork.com.

From its founding in New York City in 1848 until its closing in 2011, Knoedler & Company played a leading role in the American art world. In the late 19th century, it facilitated the formation of many of the nation’s greatest Old Master collections, including those of Henry Clay Frick and Andrew Mellon. In the 20th century, Knoedler specialized in important Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Modernist works and, at the same time, sparked a revival in early American painting. In the 1960s, the gallery began representing a number of leading American artists of the post-War generation, and, in its final decades, focused on American Contemporary art.

This auction of inventory from Knoedler & Company comprises 34 lots and includes works by important artists represented by the gallery. Robert Rauschenberg’s Spindle (Urban Bourbon Series) employs enameled aluminum as a support for his seemingly random, screened acrylic images. Other highlights include an acrylic on paper with deep, saturated colors by Helen Frankenthaler; an early sculpture by Lee Bontecou; and works by Jules Olitski, Michael Goldberg, Larry Poons, Hans Hofmann, Conrad Marca-Relli and David Smith.
