DIAMANTS DE LA COURONNE DE FRANCE
In May 1887, following the fall of the Second Empire, the French Ministry of Finance held an historic auction in the Louvre of the French crown jewels. The jewels were divided into lots and photographed for a catalogue, only one copy of which was sent to the United States - to Tiffany & Co. Tiffany's representative in Paris was the largest purchaser at the sale, successfully buying almost a third of the crown jewels. These included two lots from the spectacular Currant Leaf diamond parure made by Bapst, the French crown jeweler, for Empress Eugenie around the time of the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1855.

This brooch is similar to one that Tiffany sold to Caroline Schermerhorn Astor and is now on display at the Metropolitan Opera. See John Loring, Tiffany Jewels, p. 94.
