Very old glue relining. Very dense varnish layer. The chest area extensively repainted. Also inpainting on the forehead, the line of the nose and the cheeks. Extensive repainting along the sitter's left jaw line, possibly a repaired tear. A long crack running horizontally across the canvas above the sitter's hat, as if the canvas had been folded there.
