VARGAS, ALBERTO Standing woman with skis.
. Original drawing, watercolor and colored pencils over graphite on tracing paper laid to board, signed in pencil "A. Varga" (lr). Drawing 22 x 16 1/4 inches (56 x 41.5 cm). Matted and framed, not examined out of frame.
This charming drawing was prepared for American Weekly in 1945. All of Vargas's work for of this period bore the "Varga" variant of his signature, which Esquire Magazine insisted he use for his art; ownership of the name was ultimately the subject of a lawsuit. The V of the skis is reflective of the World War II Victory "V" sign, popularized by Churchill.
