OPPER, FREDERICK BURR Group of fifteen original drawings
, fourteen for the Happy Hooligan (debuted 1900), and one from And Her Name Was Maud. Panels measure about 10 1/2 x 23 inches (27 x 58 cm); several have instructions to the color artists on the left margin, with Opper's initials. From faint stamped dates in the right margin, these are circa 1930. Minor browning and wear, overall sound.
Opper's work was largely published by the Hearst papers, and he was highly regarded as an editorial cartoonist. The Hooligan's buddy Gloomy Gus has become a byword, and his friends Alphonse and Gaston ("After you, my dear Alphonse") are also fixtures in the language. He stopped cartooning, due to failing eyesight, in 1932.
