, comprising photographs of sculptures; exhibition catalogues for the Max Ewing Collection of Extraordinary Portraits (this copy inscribed by Ewing to his parents), the Max Ewing Collection of Incredible Portraits, and The Carnival of Venice at Julien Levy Gallery; press clippings; and handwritten postcards including one to Van Vechten. Many of the items bear Van Vechten's bookplate.
A multi-media artist and photographer, Max Ewing met Carl Van Vechten in 1922 and befriended many figures in the transatlantic avant-garde, including Theodore Dreiser, Jacques Rigaut, Jean Cocteau and Gertrude Stein.
