…Rubens will be married to Miss Eliza Patterson early in March next. She is connected with families of great respectability, and all parties are well satisfied with the alliance. She appears to be a very amiable woman about 25 years of age. Both father & Mother dead---her Brothers are concerned in a woolen Manufactory. I have painted a striking Portrait of her, happy the expression. (Sellers, C.C. 1992. Letter no. 290, page 798.)
Rubens Peale and Eliza Patterson were married on March 6, 1820. Their daughter, Mary Jane Peale, recorded in her diary, March 6, 1860, "Today Mother and Father have been married 40 years. Father says, '40 years of happiness.'"
