NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction of Summer Impressions: Fine Prints & Works on Paper on July 22, 2026 saw competitive international bidding drive impressive prices throughout the sale. This exciting new auction category showcased a wide range of affordable fine prints, watercolors and drawings spanning the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Highlights included strong results for works by Milton Avery, Alexander Calder, Salomon Corrodi, Sam Davis, Jean Dufy, Sir William Russell Flint, Marie Laurencin and Paul Resika, among many others.

Thomas Eakins
The top lot of the sale was a group of five academic studies of heads and arms by American realist artist Thomas Cowperthwaite Eakins (1844–1916) that more than tripled the $3,000-5,000 estimate, achieving $16,640. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Eakins studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before continuing his education at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme, while also studying anatomy through dissections at the École de Médecine. This rigorous academic training shaped his lifelong commitment to anatomical accuracy in his art.

Works from The Collection of the Artist Ernest Crichlow
Also featured in the auction were five prints by African American artist Ernest Crichlow (1914-2005), known for his portrayals of African American life that explore themes of family, community, resilience and racial equality. Born in Brooklyn, Crichlow studied at the Art Students League and developed a realistic style marked by empathy and social awareness. In 1969, he co-founded the Cinque Gallery with fellow artists Romare Bearden and Norman Lewis to promote greater exhibition opportunities for Black artists. Additional prints and original paintings by Ernest Crichlow from his collection will be offered in select sales this Fall. (View lots in July 22 sale)
