Auction: Doyle+Design, Mar 6, 2024
NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a successful sale in the popular Doyle+Design auction category on March 6, 2024. This highly-anticipated sale showcased a wide range of Modern and Contemporary furniture, art and design by prominent designers, artists and makers of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Highlighting the sale was Triumphant, a 2022 acrylic on canvas by the LA artist Defer that achieved $76,700, more than doubling its $20,000-30,000 estimate. A pioneer among LA graffiti writers, Defer (aka Alex Kizu, b. 1975) has played an influential role in the LA street art scene since the mid-1980s. His hand-style blends typography with cultural motifs and intricate patterns, and his work has been featured in the graffiti anthologies Graffiti LA by Steve Grody (Abrams: 2007) and The History of American Graffiti by Roger Gastman and Caleb Neelon (Harper Design: 2011).
Furniture and Design offerings included a 1950s T.H. Robsjohn Gibbings for Widdicomb Model 1711 sofa consigned by a Boca Raton, Florida Private Collector. Bidding on the sofa sent the price past its $4,000-6,000 to realize $12,160. A bamboo, rice paper and cotton “Uchiwa” (paper fan) pendant light fixture designed by Ingo Maurer in 1973 soared over its $2,000-4,000 to reach $12,800.
