Estate / Collection: The Estate of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.
CONNELL, BRIAN
Knight Errant: A Biography of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1955]. First edition, heavily annotated by Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Publisher's green cloth; 6 x 8 1/4 inches (15 x 21 cm). Binding shows signs of heavy use, with scuffs, edgewear, and a naive repair brown paper and tape repair to the spine, with annotations on nearly every page and much dogearring of significant passages. Together with another copy in a dust jacket, this one inscribed by Fairbanks, Jr. to his mother: "To my Mother, the real author of this subject— with all my love, D".
An early biography of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., heavily thumbed, doggeared, and annotated by its subject. Because an annotation on p. 219 mentions actor David Sharpe's death by ALS, we can date Fairbanks's pencil annotations to sometime after 1980. In his pencil notes, Fairbanks frequently marks interesting passages, adds details, corrects errors, or leaves a note to himself like "tell story." It seems likely that this copy was used by Fairbanks in preparing his memoir The Salad Days. A fascinating insight into the mind of a Hollywood legend taking a trip down memory lane.
