Notes:
Theodore Frelinghuysen Patterson, 1844-1906, was the nephew of the artist. Theodore was the first son of George and Lydia (Adams) Patterson. George was Mrs. Rubens Peale (Eliza Burd Patterson)’s youngest brother.
During the Civil War, Theodore was a "First Defender", one of the 530 Pennsylvanian men who marched to Washington and formed the nucleus of the force to protect the National Capital in April 1861.
One of several family portraits undertaken by Mary Jane Peale in her early 20s as she practiced with the hope of becoming a professional artist. The collection of the American Philosophical Society includes the artist's own Memoranda of Paintings Done in Oil, 1850-1902. She describes this painting: “Commenced a likeness of Theodore Patterson on canvas, as a present to his Mother, October 9th 1850. Dead-colored it, finished in Dec. 1850. I had great difficulty in getting him to sit, it was almost impossible, but I succeeded in getting a good likeness. Presented it to Aunt Lydia.”

In 1940, N. C. Wyeth was commissioned to paint a series of murals for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company’s New York Headquarters. The New England Series would comprise of nearly twenty monumental paintings depicting the spirit of New England. Included in the group was a set of four works representing the seasons, of which Crows in Winter was a part.
