Theresa Bernstein

Estate / Collection: Collection of Dr. Ellyn Berk and Raymond Heslin

Polish/American, 1890-2002
Nymphs and Jester, circa 1913
Signed Bernstein (ll); inscribed 1913 to label verso
Oil on canvas
16 x 14 inches (40.6 x 35.6 cm)

Theresa Bernstein was a pioneering modernist and one of the few women artists to establish a lasting presence in New York’s early 20th-century art scene. Trained at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and the Art Students League, she developed a bold, expressive style rooted in realism and remained committed to figuration throughout her long career. Her work captured the energy of New York City, from jazz clubs to social movements, and she remained creatively active for over a century. The present lot, depicting a jester and nymphs, may appear at first glance to be a rare departure from her more familiar urban subjects; however, the scene likely references a classical performance in Central Park.

Framed 21 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches

Sold for $960
Estimated at $1,000 - $2,000

The canvas is relined. There are very minor undulations to the canvas. There is yellowing of the varnish. Scattered drying cracks with minor pinhead-sized flaking to the pigment to the center of the jester and to the rightmost nymph and tree. UV light reveals a thick varnish layer with scattered inpainting and restoration.
