[McLOUGHLIN BROS.] The Errand Boy. New York: 1891. Fold-out game board and pieces, in original box; and Game of Uncle Sam’s Mail. New York: 1893. The cover with early transportation images, game instructions on the underside, four-part fold-out board, with numerous mail cards, dice cups, and wood game pieces in paper paper-covered wood frame box bottom. Uncle Sam's Mail is lacking one of four dice. Both boxes are quite worn and dust-soiled, with losses and chips along the extremities. Sold as-is.

NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's highly successful auction of Rare Books, Autographs & Maps on August 13, 2026 saw competitive bidding drive exceptional results, with a sale total that far surpassed expectations and an impressive 94% sell-through rate. This online summer sale brought together a diverse selection of Americana, literature, sporting books, manuscripts, travel and voyages, children's and illustrated books, fine bindings, autographs, maps, and more.
Leading the sale was Sylvae (2008), a fine press artist's book by Ben Verhoeven and Gaylord Schanilec documenting the forests surrounding the Wisconsin private press Midnight Paper Sales, complete with 25 mounted wood specimens. One of just 26 large-paper lettered copies and the first example to appear at auction, the exceptional work soared past its $2,000-3,000 estimate to realize $14,080.
From the collection of artist and early Paris Review illustrator Beatrice Dabney Adams was a selection of presidential memorabilia from her husband, Charles Francis Adams IV, a direct descendant of John Adams and John Quincy Adams. Highlighting the offerings was a lot of nine volumes of poetry signed by John Quincy Adams that realized $6,400, more than double the $2,000-3,000 estimate (Read More).
Another standout was Henri d’Étampes de Valençay’s remarkably frank account of life at the Papal Court in the 1650s. Written around 1656 as guidance for Valençay’s successor as ambassador to the Holy See, this manuscript from the celebrated Thomas Phillipps collection far exceeded its $800-1,200 estimate to realize $6,400.
A large offering of early printed books attracted strong competition, including a 1474 edition of Antoninus Florentinus' Confessionale, an influential manual for confessors printed in Venice less than two decades after Gutenberg's Bible. Despite its incomplete state, this early incunable more than tripled its $800-1,200 estimate to realize $3,840.
