Superb illuminated leaf from a vernacular Dutch prayer book

Estate / Collection: The Alan and Marion Oliner Collection

Single leaf from a Dutch Book of Hours. Perhaps Delft: about 1450. 7 3/8 x 5 1/4 inches (19 x 13 cm); single vellum leaf, 20 lines in black ink in a fine textura hand, the text in Middle Dutch, richly illuminated with laid gold and colors, the decorations including an exceptional nine-line illuminated, surrounded with elaborate borders of acanthus leaves, strawberries and flowers (one of these heightened in shell gold). About fine. Elaborately framed.

A beautiful leaf, extracted from what must have been a first-rate vernacular Dutch prayer book. The text begins "Dit ist die getide vande heiligen geeste" i.e. the portion with prayers for Pentecost. The impetus for such manuscripts directed to a lay audience (presently the focus of an important research project—"Pages of Prayer: The Ecosystem of Vernacular Prayer Books in the Late Medieval Low Countries, c. 1380-1550 "—by Anna Dlabacová) was the translation into vernacular Dutch of the text of the Book of Hours by Geert Grote. The present leaf was sold to the decedent by H. P. Kraus in the 1970s.
