Rectangular, the Mother of God portrayed full-length, standing on a gold stone with upraised hands, wearing a blue chiton and a scarlet belt suspending an embroidered cloth to wipe away tears, on a gold ground, within an arched frame chased with foliage and the Russian inscription: God is within her [the city of God], she will not fall; God will help her at break of day (Psalm 46:5), all above the Russian inscription: The image of the mosaic icon of the Most Holy Theotokos on the vault of the Kiev-Sophia Cathedral from the years of Grand Duke Yaroslav 1038. Height 11 1/4 inches (28.6 cm), width 8 1/2 inches (21.6 cm).

In generally good condition. Light rubbing to gilding and light surface scratches. Edges of riza bent in areas. Painting flaking (visible in catalogue photos).
