The Tribute Money (Caesar's Coin)
Oil on canvas
45 3/4 x 66 inches (116.3 x 167.7 cm)
The original version of this composition, painted by Rubens in 1612-14, is now in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. The story illustrated appears in Matthew 22:15-22, where a group of Pharisees, hoping to trick Jesus into saying something impolitic, ask him, "Is it right to pay a tax to Caesar or not?" To which Jesus, understanding the malice of the question, replies "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used to pay the tax." When they bring him a denarius, he asks, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?" "Caesar's" they reply. To which Jesus responds with the proverbial line, "Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
