This work will be included in the Cassatt Committee's revision of Adelyn Dohme Breeskin's catalogue raisonne of the works of Mary Cassatt. It is one of several preparatory studies in various media for Mother and Child in a Boat, 1908, oil on canvas, Collection Addison Gallery of American Art: Gift of Anonymous Donor (Br. 664). A related study in oil, Mother and Child in a Boat, oil on canvas, is included in the permanent collection of the High Museum of Art, 76.22 (Br. 519); and Head of a Little Girl: Study for Mother and Child in a Boat, circa 1908, watercolor on paper, 17 3/4 x 12 3/4 inches, is owned by the San Diego Museum of Art: Bequest of Mrs. Henry A. Everett (Br. 663). This was the only privately owned watercolor included in the group of works exhibited at the High Museum of Art, in 1993-94.

Light toning along edges. Irregular area of loss, 3/4 x 1/16 inches deep at extreme right edge, center. Hinged at top. Work is not laid down.
