CLEVELAND, GROVER
Fourteen autograph letters signed by Grover Cleveland; two typed letters signed; and one letter relating to a request of the President written by David Lamont. All letters but the last retain the original envelopes, and are addressed by Cleveland to C. H. Kavanaugh of Waterford, New York. Various sizes. Two letters are dated 1896, and are written by Cleveland while he was President. The balance fall between 1901 and 1905. There are a total of approximately thirty pages of text in Cleveland's hand. Letters and envelopes generally in very good condition.
Starting with a gift of an outfit of underwear, Kavanaugh seems to have developed a cordial relationship with the President. This appears to have foundered to some degree in 1905, in which year Kavanaugh was engaged in a lawsuit against a fraudulent shipbuilding concern.
