DICKENS, CHARLES
A tale of two cities. London: Chapman & Hall, 1859. First book edition, first issue with p. 213 mispaginated 113, the signature mark "b" at the foot of the plate list, the misspelling "affetcionately" on line 12, p. 134. Early three-quarters mauve calf, marbled sides. 8 1/4 inches (21 cm), all edges marbled. viii pp. including title leaf, 254 pp., with 16 plates by Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"). These are generally good impressions, with the captions fairly strongly inked and fully legible (there was only one set of the plates made, and these became progressively worn over the course of the printing). Some wear to binding, but sound; within, light toning to plates, generally a clean copy, a few leaves with corner-creases or short marginal tears. Smith I, 13.
