ROWSON, SUSANNA Charlotte Temple. A Tale of Truth...

Estate / Collection: The Property of a New England Family

ROWSON, SUSANNA
Charlotte Temple. A Tale of Truth...
Alexandria: Cottom & Stewart, 1802. Sixth American edition (according to the title-page); the first American was Philadelphia, 1794. Two volumes in one, period quarter brown sheep, marbled boards. 5 1/4 x 3 inches (13.25 x 7.75 cm); 137, [1] pp., continually paginated. Binding rubbed and worn, internally scattered staining and soiling, a few mostly marginal tears, several old names in ink.

An enormously popular work by an Anglo-American author, this was one of the first American bestsellers, running through many printings in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. This unusual Alexandria edition is quite rare; Wright 2167 locates 3 copies, though OCLC now records more. A narrative of seduction and betrayal, in which the seducer, John Montraville, was possibly based on John Montresor, the engineer and cartographer, who was a first cousin of the author,
