[TRIBECA-HUDSON SQUARE]
LOSS, CHARLES (surveyor). Hudson Square. Manuscript plan in ink on paper, with "Surveyed New York May 2nd 1810 by Charles Loss, City Surveyor" in ink. Loss has also added "Surveyor fees ... $78." 17 x 18 1/2 inches (43 x 47 cm). The map is backed. Toned along one edge, tears, later markings.
The area known as Hudson's Square, now considered the northern part of Tribeca, was first laid-out in the late 18th century. St. John's Church was built in 1803. Here Hudson Square is bounded by Beach, Laight, Hudson and Varick Streets, the latter named for the patriot and long serving mayor of New York Richard Varick (mayor from 1789 to 1801). St. John's Church is at the top of the square and the buildings around the square are owned by fashionable names of the period: Lispenard, Murray, Bayard, Church, Moore and Rufus King.
