FRANCK, CÉSAR and LOUIS DE FOURCAUD, lyrics
Nocturne. Autograph manuscript signed "Hommage/César Franck" on the last leaf, ink on paper. Paris: circa [1884]. 13 7/8 x 10 5/8 inches (35 x 27 cm); 4 pp. on a bifolium of 2 ff., notated with a system of three staves, 14 lines in all, the complete composition with lyrics in full; a few minor erasures. Some toning, some separation to fold, a few minor creases, in general in a sound state of preservation.
Nocturne—Mohr Franck Werke Verzeichnis (FWV) 85—was written by the great French Romantic organist and composer César Franck circa 1884. It is based on a poem by Louis de Fourcaud (1851-1914), to whom the work is dedicated; the written dedication is at the upper right on the first page. Scored for voice and piano, it is an important work in the mélodie repertoire. Franck's works in manuscript are not widely held in the United States; the Pierpont Morgan Library owns a number, including Mariage des Roses, another (slightly earlier) art song.
